Press freedom regresses slightly

According to the New York-based Committee To Protect Journalists (CPJ), 134 journalists are imprisoned throughout the world. The slight increase in the last year is explained by the new repression of online journalists.
China has the worst record – for the eighth consecutive year – with 31 journalists imprisoned officially. Other major offenders include Cuba (24 detainees), Eritrea (23) and Ethiopia (18). The United States, Mexico, Russia and Turkey are also among the 24 countries to keep journalists imprisoned.
More than one third of the imprisoned journalists (49) are online reporters, editors or bloggers. "We're at a crucial juncture in the fight for press freedom because authoritarian states have made the Internet a major front in their effort to control information," said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon.
Most journalists are charged with ‘antistate’ crimes, such as subversion, leakage of State secrets and such. It also seems there’s an increase in the number (20) of journalists held for no valid charges. Two of these are held by the US.
Obviously enough, the restrictions in press freedom and States' new grip on online journalists can't be good news.
