Online video expands in US and UK

The UK’s Times Online and net magazine Slate have announced plans to expand online video clips.  The Times Online has added Sky News to their roster of video clips, and Slate will begin adding video interviews to its site.

Times Online TV launched this June, and already runs video footage from Reuters and Fox News.  Sky News, a 24 hour news channel, will be added to the Times TV player.  The coverage will include top headlines, business news, and weather reports.

The Washington Post’s Slate will add video to its site thanks to financial sponsor Microsoft.  The video will include campaign spoofs by political correspondent John Dickerson as well as interviews by literary critic Clive James

Slate’s move to video aligns with parent company Washingtonpost.Interactive’s quest to expand multimedia.  Last week the company launched Washington Post and Slate editions for mobile phones.

The progression toward video on websites has been predicted for quite some time now.  In order to attract readers to websites, news companies are pulling out all the stops.
