The Spokane Spokesman-Review has instituted a pioneering “transparent newsroom” that strives for a seamless integration between the newspaper and its community. The paper won an award for its efforts on September 18 from the Institute for Interactive Journalism of the University of Maryland.
The Spokesman’s online “transparent newsroom” includes:
- A blog outlining the inner workings of the paper, including editorial decisions and details of news meetings.
- The opportunity for visitors to the website to comment on articles and ask questions.
- Editors’ explanations of their news gathering methods and layout decisions.
