DR Congo: French journalist expelled before national elections

Posted by Maddie Hanna on July 5, 2006 at 11:15 AM
As campaigning builds for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first free national elections in more than 40 years, on Monday the country expelled a French journalist without official explanation.

Diplomats worry the expulsion of Ghislaine Dupont, a Radio France Internationale correspondent with extensive background in covering the Democratic Republic of Congo, represents a wider crackdown on the press.

Dupont had spent months trying to get accreditation to cover the polls on July 30. When expelled, she said she was told it was because she had been working without accreditation.
