South Africa: Public broadcast channel cans critical Mbeki program

Posted by Maddie Hanna on June 16, 2006 at 12:22 PM
A South African public broadcast network, accused of being a mouthpiece for the former apartheid regime, was scheduled to take a bolder route by airing a series of controversial documentaries. But on Wednesday the network dropped a 30-minute program on President Thabo Mbeki just before its projected airing, a move that rehashed allegations of the network’s deference to government demands.
Dali Mpofu, chief executive of the broadcasting company, denied the insinuation of government control. The decision, he told the Guardian, was made based on legal advice that the program was unbalanced and defamatory.
