BBC to reopen Lebanon bureau, 15 years later

Posted by Maddie Hanna on June 6, 2006 at 12:40 PM
In the wake of a slew of stories reporting on the plight of journalists in the Middle East, the BBC announced last week it will reopen its bureau in Lebanon — 15 years after it was closed for security reasons.

Simon Wilson, editor of the BBC’s Middle East bureaus, told the Guardian coverage would focus on more than “bullets, bombs and assassinations.” Jim Muir, a veteran Middle East correspondent, will report on regional politics from Beirut and cover Lebanon and Syria from the same building as the AP.

Attention was recently refocused on dangerous conditions for journalists in the Middle East when CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier was hospitalized after a roadside bomb exploded in Iraq, killing two of her crew members.
