US: Broadcasts from Bush, companies get FCC attention

Posted by Maddie Hanna on May 29, 2006 at 2:17 PM
Television stations across the U.S. are using fake news broadcasts supplied by the Bush administration and major corporations, according to a report by the non-profit group Centre for Media and Democracy, and now federal authorities are looking into it.

The report found that during a 10-month period, at least 77 stations had used the “Video News Releases” — sometimes features on successes in the war in Iraq or product promotions — and passed them off as normal news, without source citation. Dozens of stations are now under investigation by the FCC.

The State Department is one of 20 federal agencies that have produced VNRs, the Independent reported, and corporations involved include Pfizer, Mars, General Motors and Intel.

The Bush administration’s involvement with the media has received a considerable amount of attention recently, including reports on both government investigations targeting journalists who receive information leaks and the Pentagon’s practice of paying off Iraqi journalists in order to win pro-U.S. coverage.
