US: more newspaper stock pages cut

Cutting the number of pages dedicated to stock pages is officially becoming a trend. Los Angeles Times has announced that it will cut its stock listings down to one page. But unlike other papers that have done so, LAT reports that it will expand it's business coverage.

Denver's Rocky Mountain News recently took a similar step to the chagrin of older readers who were used to browsing the broadsheet stocks. Although the absence of the pages bothered these readers, the paper's editor noticed no loss of circulation related to the decision and reasoned that most everyone reads their stock on the Internet.

The paper did not divulge any plans to enhance coverage.

LAT, on the other hand, will use the open pages to expand coverage of Southern California business and economy and will introduce new features and packages.

This could be a sign of what's to come for the newspaper: cutting content rendered obsolete by the Internet and reinvesting the money saved into improving and expanding offerings.
