Christian Science Monitor launches appeal for release of captive journalist Jill Carroll
US publication Christian Science Monitor (CSM) has launched a campaign for the release of Jill Carroll, a CSM journalist who has been held captive in Iraq since 7, January. The videotaped message begins with the following phrase appearing in text: "Please help with the release of journalist Jill Carroll." Photos of Ms. Carroll are then shown, while the following message is narrated: "Kidnapped American journalist Jill Carroll loves Iraq, and now she needs your help. Time has come for Jill Carroll to return home safely."
CSM's Washington bureau chief made the following statement about the television campaign: "We're doing this to keep Jill in the minds of the Iraqi public, so that if people were to see her they would know who she is and could help her."
Ms. Carroll's kidnappers have demanded the release of all female detainees in Iraq. Iraq's Interior Minister has stated he believes Ms. Carroll is still alive, although the deadline set by her kidnappers for the US to comply with their demands expired last month.
