China: weekly supplement back to the presses, sans editors

Posted by John Burke on February 20, 2006 at 3:56 PM
After having been shut down on January 24 for having printed a controversial article, the China Youth Daily supplement Bingdian Weekly will resume publication on March 1st, but without its editor, Li Datong, and deputy editor, Lu Yuegang. Its original closure was met with resistance in China as well as abroad.

One of the stipulations of the Chinese government in allowing the supplement, whose banner name means freezing point, to be printed is for China Youth Daily to publish an article denouncing the article that caused the furor, an essay by a professor which questioned the official Party interpretations of certain histroical events.

13 respected intellectuals and retired officials signed a declaration calling for the supplement's return, but could not save the jobs of the editors whom will both be transferred.
