UK newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror, owner of Wales' Western Mail, South Wales Echo and Daily Post, has had to explain to the Welsh Assembly's culture committee why the decision to cut 38 jobs at its Welsh operations was made.

The publisher has stated that a decline in advertising revenue forced the job cuts.  

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has also been very critical of Trinity Mirror's Welsh job cuts, stating that given that the company made a profit of 200 million pounds sterling last year, and that one of its most profitable markets was Wales, it was difficult to understand why the job cuts were necessary.

Trinity Mirror has faced similar scrutiny at the hands of the Scottish Parliament in connection with job losses (see previous posting).
