Libya to open up state controlled media market
Libya is set to open up its media market, under government control for the past thirty years, to private newspapers, radio and television. The project is to be coordinated by a new company called 1/9, to be run by leader Moamer Kadhafi's son Seif-al-Islam.
Spokesman for 1/9 Abdel Salam al-Mushri announced that the company has signed agreements with international publishers to distribute approximately 50 uncensored international publications in Libya, notably US magazine Newsweek, French newspaper Le Monde and Germany's Der Speigel. There are also plans to publish a daily in collaboration with The Financial Times, starting in September. It will be a "variety publication including politics and sports."
Libya currently has four official newspapers, and one state television and one state radio station.
A member of Libya's journalists' syndicate said the "Libyan media are behind (other countries) and this project will radically fix the problem."
