Iran: newspaper closed down

Posted by Dominique Lewis Tuohy on January 3, 2006 at 12:23 PM

A newspaper has been closed down and a planned publication for women banned from release by the Iranian government.

Reuters obtained a copy of the ban issued by the Culture Ministry, it stated the following: "The Supervisory Board on the Press agreed to the temporary closure of Asia newspaper and Nour-e Banovan and ordered their cases sent to court."

No official reason was given for the ban, although Reuters reports that staff at Asia newspaper "had been given a warning in recent months for printing photographs of women considered to have been improperly dressed."

Since the year 2000 more than 100 publications have been closed down in iran.
