Denmark and Arab League call truce in cartoons row
Danish foreign minister Per Stig Moeller told Danish news agency Ritzau that he came to an agreement with Arab Leauge Secretary General Amr Mussa to end the recent row over the cartoons of Mohammed published in Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten. (see previous posting and here and here)
Moeller said that he confirmed to Mr. Mussa that the Danish government respects all religions: "It is clear that there must be mutual respect for each other's religions, that there must be dialogue between cultures and religions and that no one is interested in a clash of civilizations ... We naturally respect Islam as a major religion."
Moeller also placed emphasis on the issue of freedom of expression and its status as a fundamental human right. He however condemned any action "which tries to demonise certain groups due to their religious or ethnic background."
