Dutch leftwing media partnership

Dutch public broadcaster VARA and De Volkskrant newspaper are launching a partnership to promote leftwing opinions in the Netherlands, NIS News has reported.
Acknowledging a feeling of change in the political climate, De Volkskrant's chief editors note that six months ago such a move would have been "unthinkable." In the current run-up to the local elections however, the editorial teams of the newspaper and VARA talk show Pauw & Witteman, are committed to working together in order to relay this period of significant change to the public. It is reported that the partnership will take shape in the newspaper with articles and in the TV programme with reports, such as street interviews. The first article on the subject will be published in De Volkskrant's Het Vervolg supplement.

In response to the popular rightwing website Geenstijl.nl, VARA
unveiled its leftist website yesterday, Joop.nl, to act as a
counterbalance. Despite the fact that VARA tried - and failed - to
launch similar sites twice last year, the company believes that the
time is now right for attempt number three.
According to the web site's initiator, Francisco Van Jole, Joop.nl is "a site where ideas can be born" and "Political colour will not be looked at". Owing to the fact that Van Joop wants the website to act as a forum for free thought, without fear of execration, reactions will be moderated before being published and refused if they "contain accusations without evidence" or if they are "hurtful". Alongside opinion, the website will also feature commentary in the format of columns from various socialist politicians.
Media Minister Ronald Plasterk has responded to the move with enthusiasm, and implored other newspapers and public broadcasters to follow suit- a concept that has only recently received the legal go-ahead. Whilst VARA and De Volkskrant have not yet made any official statement as to whether they have further plans for cross-media partnership, they are said to be considering whether VARA will make use of De Volkskrant's network of foreign correspondents.
