UK: All news is "good news" at North-East community paper
Posted by Liz Webber on July 28, 2009 at 3:25 PM
Think news outlets only report on disasters, crime and political scandal? Not at Coastal View, a recently launched community newspaper for the borough of Redcar and Cleveland in the North-East. The new publication focuses solely on positive accounts, from success stories of local businesses to activities and events.
The free 16-page monthly has a distribution of 20,000, which includes
homes and businesses. Coastal View is a non-profit venture, with some
of its funding coming from advertising and the rest provided by a local
enterprise grant. Any extra profits the newspaper makes will be
invested back into the community.
Editor David Honeywell, a freelancer for the Evening Gazette and Northern Echo and a part-time PR writer, asserts initial responses have been positive.
It will be interesting to see how Coastal View fares, considering its highly-specialized content and the fact that there is as yet no website to attract community involvement (although the newspaper is available for download as a PDF). The business model of a free, non-profit publication could also prove difficult in a time when advertisers are turning away from traditional media. However, if there is a community demand for such a newspaper as Honeywell claims, his goal of maintaining the project "for many years to come" could just well succeed.
