Greenspun Media, parent of the Las Vegas Sun, has begun merging their print and online assets in the Las Vegas area. 

The World Association of Newspapers and IFRA, the leading international associations for print and digital news publishing, have merged into a new organisation, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). The combined new organisation will represent more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3000 companies in more than 120 countries. WAN-IFRA is dedicated "to be the indispensable partner of newspapers and the entire news publishing industry worldwide, particularly our members, in the defense and promotion of press freedom, quality journalism and editorial integrity, and the development of prosperous businesses and technology."

Yesterday, Forbes announced that The New York Times was planning to shut down the website of its sister paper, International Herald Tribune. According to Paid Content, the sight will not be shut down. Instead, it will be co-branded as a global edition of The New York Times.  

Vivian Schiller, SVP and GM of NYTimes.com told Paid Content that the idea is to have one global brand. According to Schiller, users will be able to choose between a US and a Global edition of the website.

Staff changes are also planned, but the editorial team will remain in Paris while the production will be based in New York, since the two will share a single platform.

As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce costs, The New York Times will consolidate some sections of the newspaper beginning on 6 October.

Thirty years after making a decision to publish a separate Metro and Sports section in its paper, the New York Times has decided to pull them back in order to save money on printing.

The New York edition of the Times, the paper's Metro section will be integrated into the main news section from Monday to Saturday. The sports section will be folded into the business section from Tuesday to Friday. The Times will become a four-section paper on Mondays through to Wednesdays, allowing it to eliminate the early press run and the collation process on those days.

The New York Times emphasised that they are not reducing the space devoted to Metro or Sports news. These changes will affect the New York edition only, as the national edition is already configured in a similar fashion.

However, for New Yorkers who like to single out the Metro or Sports sections, the new design will be a little less convenient.

Nevertheless there will be some advantages to the new-look - a freestanding Saturday Arts section and a return to later deadlines for Business news on Monday. The newspaper is also looking to create later deadlines for culture coverage.

The iconic newspaper is looking at ways to stop local news from getting lost in the fold, but state that physical arrangements at the newspaper are not that important as more readers turn to the Web.

The New York Times recently raised the newsstand price from $1.25 up to $1.50.

Lee Enterprises is combining two Idaho dailies, The Times-News (Twin Falls) and the South Idaho Press (Burley), plus three weeklies into one daily: The Times-News. It will be launched on 18 August.

Brad Hurd, Times-News Publisher, announced that the headcount will be reduced by 14, and that the combined paper and website will employ 109 people.

M. Hurd has also declared that they are intending "to devote all of their resources into a single, stronger and more regional newspaper, opposed to spreading them out among a variety of papers".

The South Idaho Press has a circulation of just under 4.000 and The Times-News about 20.500, and the weeklies less than 600 subscribers.

Previously, in April, Lee sold the Wood River Journal (Hailey, Idaho) and closed two small weeklies.

The University of Florida (UoF) announced plans for a new Center for Media Innovation and Research to educate students in digital media and to conduct research in the field, Editor and Publisher reported.

"The goal is to have every single student have experience in emerging media so that when they leave here they can adapt to a rapidly changing field," said John Wright, UoF's dean of the College of Journalism and Communications.

The project includes:

-"21st Century Newsroom and Laboratory", helping to merge faculty and students in print, online and broadcast journalism.
-"Digital Laboratory for Strategic Communications", offering space for advertising and PR students who work in digital media.

The center is estimated to cost $1.5 million, half of which will be paid for by the state and the rest from "private sources", Editor and Publisher reported.

The Guardian and its sister Sunday title, The Observer, are conducting staff exercises to merge sections, in an effort to produce 24/7 online news delivery. This may also explain why Observer editor Roger Alton resigned on Wednesday.

Ten media companies and Suburban Newspapers of America have joined to create the first national advertising network for local papers. President of SNA, Nancy Lane, says of the alliance: “Media buyers have been telling us for years that our industry (community newspapers) is difficult to buy…Now, we are removing that barrier.” 

The United States' largest daily USA Today has announced it will merge its print and online newsrooms. As part of this convergence Kinsey Willson, the current editor of USAToday.com, will join John Hillkirk as a second executive editor for the merged operation. Mergers are in the air in Europe (maybe as a result of the circulation crisis). According to Roundabout and the European Journalism Centre, there is a plan to publish a single newspaper for the entire Randstad area - the name given to the area comprising the main Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague -. Presented by two major Dutch newspaper publishers PCM Uitgevers and Wegener, this plan would make the newspaper the second biggest in the Netherlands after De Telegraaf. The proposed merger will include, among others, Algemeen Dagblad, Rotterdams Dagblad, Utrechts Nieuwsblad and Haagsche Courant. Job cuts are to be expected as the eight newspapers currently employ 1,200 people. Not all the newspapers are willing to merge and some are protesting against the plan. In the end, the Dutch Competition authority has to give the merger the go-ahead." Understandable, but not good for freedom and diversity of expression!
