The Guardian reconsiders Technology supplement
Posted by Christie Silk on June 4, 2009 at 2:46 PM
The Guardian is due to drop its Thursday Technology supplement, paidContent:UK reports. The online edition will continue and it is possible that the supplement, a 'G3' production, will be merged with Media Guardian. The reshuffle is potentially a result of a reduction of spending in technology advertising. It is also feasible that the printed edition just could not compete with its online counterpart, which is updated daily. Technology enthusiasts, moreover, are presumably more inclined to log on regularly than wait for the Thursday paper to land on the doorstep.
Guardian News &
Media told paidContent:UK: "We
are, however, committed to expanding our technology coverage online to better meet the needs of the technology audience.
The paper is currently deciding on ideas for the replacement of the section, which it hopes will be ready before Technology disappears. The axe comes in the shadow of the current slowdown in the industry, as papers are forced to cut back and innovate, at times quite dramatically, in order to accommodate the down-turn. Guardian News and Media recently announced that it would have to lose 50 staff members, although it is unclear if there will be any resulting redundancies from this cut.
Nick Passmore launched the Online supplement in May 1994. In 2005 it was rebranded Technology with the arrival of new editor Charles Arthur, and its science counterpart supplement Life was merged into the paper when the paper adopted a berliner format.
