New York Times redesigns to lower costs

Following announcements of salary cuts and dropping their 'City' section, the New York Times now has plans underway to eliminate and combine several weekly sections.
Along with turning the guide to each day's paper into a single page, Bill Keller, the executive editor, said on Thursday that as of May 1, they will be dropping the Friday 'Escapes' section and the Sunday regional section. "Taken together, these moves will save millions of dollars - savings that would otherwise have to come out of payroll," he wrote.

The 'Escapes' section will be merged into the Weekend section and the
Sunday regional sections, earliest May 24, will be reduced to a new
section that combines NY City and region features.
People have expressed concerns with these changes, saying the New York Times will lose it's local and even National feel by focusing on it's international reputation. However to make up for the less regional coverage in the newspaper, stories will be posted on their recently launched hyperlocal news site called The Local, which will cover five communities in New Jersey and Brooklyn.
In addition to the cuts in the newspaper, they plan on removing the fashion layout in the New York Times Magazine by May 10 and will move fashion reporting to the T magazines and the 'Styles' sections.
The moves should not affect newsroom jobs, but some people will be moved around. Most of the sections being cut rely a great deal on freelance work, which the paper plans to cut by 10 to 15 percent.
"The hope and expectation remain that the pay cuts and the spending cuts outlined above will get us through the year without the need for other significant reductions," wrote Keller in his memo to the staff on Thursday.
Recently the New York Times Co. threatened to shut down the Boston Globe if it does not get concessions. And the International Herald Tribune's website has joined NYT.com as 'The Global Edition' of (global.nytimes.com).
