Mirror newspapers could axe US correspondent, while GlobalPost seems to be thriving

According to the Guardian, the Mirror newspapers are considering axing the post of US correspondent when current correspondent Anton Antonowicz returns to London later this year, which would leave both the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror with no staff reporters in America. A source at the paper has said that Trinity Mirror hopes to "close the post quietly".

Trinity Mirror refused to confirm the story; "The US correspondent position is still there. However, with all these things, if that were ever to change our staff would be the first to know," said a Daily Mirror spokesman.
Meanwhile, GlobalPost, which specialises in international reporting and was founded with the idea "that, as U.S. newspapers cut overseas staff to save money, GlobalPost would step in with a network of regular freelancers to help fill the gap" according to Reuters, is apparently going from strength to strength.

It has 65 correspondents in 45 countries, launched in January and "has had a good first quarter and sees positive signs for the rest of the year". The Mirror newspapers' possible elimination of its US reporter, combined with GlobalPost's success in a solely foreign reporting role is representative of ongoing changes in the role of foreign correspondents.
