Northeast Consortium: a five-newspaper strong content coalition revealed

A step further in the two-publication content-sharing deals that have become so common of late: five newspapers in the New Jersey and New York area have joined up to form the Northeast Consortium.  The five publications will share articles, photographs and graphics in order to enhance each ones coverage.  According to information obtained by the Editor & Publisher, the five participants will be The Star-Ledger of Newark (NJ); The Record of Hackensack (NJ); the Times Union in Albany (NY); The Buffalo News (NY); and the Daily News of New York (NY).

The plan is to have a central content repository where editors can send content that they wish to be shared, although the newspapers can retain exclusive content such as columns and investigative work.  Ed Fay, vice President and director of editorial administration for the Daily News explained "We reached out to other newsrooms to get everyone together... we were looking for a way to enhance our coverage."  Stephen Borg, Record publisher agrees, stating, "Record readers will benefit from expanded coverage."  Content sharing between newspapers has been increasingly present recently, as newspapers seek to continue to produce high qualty content whilst operating under more restricted budgets.
