USA Today to stop international edition

USA Today announced on Friday that the international edition will stop printing as of February 6th. The top-selling newspaper, owned by Gannett Company Inc, will continue to look for partners in Europe and South America to continue publishing, like it recently did its Caribbean edition.

The news comes after Gannett announced an unpaid week off for its employees recently since it was 'experiencing its worst economic conditions ever'.
With the economic crisis hitting the media industry harder than ever, many newspapers are scrambling to hold on to what they've got. USA Today, is hoping to continue its publication, by continuing with an arrangement similar to that made in the Caribbean, where they get a pre-copy licensing fee for producing articles, photos and other content, while the local partners print and sell ads themselves.

Gannett also played with the possibility of dropping AP's content service to start one of their own. In a cost-cutting effort, a report informed how USA Today and other Gannett publications were considering swapping AP content for USAT ones : a move that shows, yet again, how the money crunch is forcing some media houses to move quality content to second priority to combat the crisis.
