US: New printer allows publishers to customize content
Posted by Lauren Drablier on November 6, 2008 at 9:56 AM
Hewlett-Packard has designed a digital Inkjet Web Press especially for newspapers, book publishers and commercial print shops.
The printer runs $2.5 million and can print full-color, newspaper-sized pages. It also prints wider than other editions. The goal of HP was to "expand the business model for publishers by driving down the cost of small-volume press runs. And because the press is digital it allows publishers to tailor their content to specific audiences."
SignOnSanDiego gives several examples of what this could mean for the print industry, "for a book publisher, the digital press might allow it to print small volumes of currently out-of-print books. For commercial printers, it opens the door to printing personalized ads on bank statements, telephone bills and other transactional documents."

Newspapers would be able to print different editions with targeted advertising. Glen Hopkins, HP's general manager for printing and technology believes there is huge potential for individualized newspapers. He believes that the new HP printer is leading the way to the future of printing.
Hopkins also recognizes that it is hard to beat the low cost of analog presses, however HP is stressing the importance of the flexibility of the Web Press to personalize content.
No newspapers have ordered the press as of yet, however one US paper will be testing it and will produce fourteen different versions of their paper each day with the new printer.
"HP is convinced that the Web Press opens a host of new business models for stressed publishers trying to cope with online competition." One printer can be used for a variety of things, publishers from books to newspapers to magazines could team up to share printers in order to further cut costs, so perhaps it is the start of a solution for the future of print.
