UK: Reduced subeditors and change in hours at Express Newspapers

Upon receiving plans outlining coping with fewer staff, a union meeting of subeditors at Express Newspapers convenened to discuss their future.

The new system by Express titles, designed to "increase effectiveness and contribute to the required cost savings," would have reporters writing copy "to fit" before being checked by "rewriters."

Ian Parrot, Express Newspapers group managing editor, said that the system expects reporters "to take responsibility for their work in terms of structure, content and appropriateness," saying that the change in reduction of subeditors required "no new skills" for journalists except learning the new production model, WoodWing.

WoodWing is a content management system that combines InDesign and InCopy.

The National Union of Journalists also met to discuss changes at Richard Desmond-owned publications, which rotates the hours subeditors would have to work under if they chose to stay.  Certain Richard Desmond titles underwent similar changes to the Express Newspaper newsrooms.
