UK: Local papers buck declining circulation trend

View From Publishing, a small community newspaper publisher in the UK, announces increased year-on-year circulation and advertising revenues. Since September 2008, the company's titles have surged to over £1 million in ad revenues.
View From Publishing was launched in 2005 by West Country reporter Peter Evans.
According to Evans, even though his titles had a difficult summer, the
group continues to have rising sales since content focuses on local
retail and creative features.
"We don't underestimate the strength of the competition or the pressures on advertising budgets at this time, but the community content of our newspapers have become compulsive reading in the small towns we serve and local advertisers recognize this. Local, local, local is the mantra," he said.
The number of staff employed by the publisher has jumped from seven in 2005 to nearly 30 this year. Almost 200 pages of tabloid material is produced per week. The group's 12 weekly titles are published across Honiton, Sidmouth, Axminster, Seaton, Colyton, Lyme Regis, Bridport, Beaminster, Dorchester, Crewkerne, Chard, Ilminster and the Blackdown Hills. Their ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation) figures amount to 41,240.
Lawrie Proctor, managing director of View From's advertising representative Mediaforce, says that the publisher's titles are authentic community papers that are quite popular in their respective regions. Proctor adds that advertisers may be more interested in what smaller papers with ABC accreditation can offer to their clients "in a cost effective manner."
