A new training initiative between the BBC and the University of Central Lancashire is giving freelance journalists the chance to learn the newest skills in digital production, according to Hold the Front Page.

The program will give "30 freelance and broadcast journalists from the region the chance to get to grips with producing content for a number of platforms - online, TV, radio and mobile."

The aim of the £2.8 million digital and media skills program, funded by the North West Regional Development Agency, is to develop the area's media workforce into "multi-platform thinkers, producers and developers."

The initiative is a "combination drawing on the strengths of two institutions who are each expert in their field," said head of UCL's School of Journalism, Media and Communication Mike Ward.

One could call the merge of an official news organization with a facility that trains the staff of such an organization the axiomatic result of the changing times.

"Collaboration is the key to successful journalism in an increasingly connected and shared media space," Ward said.
