US: More newspapers to drop AP

According to The New York Times, The Columbus Dispatch has announced plans to drop the Associated Press wire service.  This follows the Tribune Co. announcement last week

url.jpgThe Columbus Dispatch has carried AP for the most part of its 137-year history and is now planning to discontinue its subscription to the service because it is unhappy with both the price and the service.

According to the NYT, "editors and publishers at some other papers have become vocal critics of the way The A.P. operates, saying that it charges more than they can afford, delivers too little of what they need and -- particularly galling to them -- is sometimes acting as their competitor on the Internet."

Newspapers that have announced plans to drop the service are now trying to come up with ways to make up for the news and information they receive from the AP.  The AP has over 3,000 journalists in 100 countries.  However, for many papers, the AP is their greatest expense and with dropping advertising revenue and financial difficulties, papers are looking for ways to cut costs.
