Opinion: Is the future somewhere in between elite and free newspapers?

Mario Garcia recently published an article discussing the future model of the newspaper. He referenced Philip Meyers recent article in American Journalism Review, which also presented some ideas on where newspapers and journalism are headed.
Garcia uses a few examples to illustrate his view of the future. First, The Economist,
with its unique "information architecture and navigation", creative
visuals, distinct personality, in-depth analysis and interpretation,
and focused content is an example of what many people desire to read
and enjoy reading today.
Second, Garcia points to the growing popularity of free newspapers in the UK. His example is thelondonpaper, with a daily circulation of 500,000 and growing advertising revenue. This demonstrates the other facet of the demand for news - something that is quick, easy to read and free.

He also used the example of Die Zeit, a German paper although not printed daily is still a success.
Garcia concludes by stating, "the future lies somewhere at this
intersection, the one where a combination. The New York Times/The
Economist/Die Zeit meet a colorful free version of USAToday."
