US: The New York Sun may shut down

Posted by Alisa Zykova on September 4, 2008 at 9:37 AM

The New York Sun, printed since 2002 as a "conservative-leaning alternative" to The New York Times (NYT), announces that it may stop being published by the end of this month if it doesn't receive adequate funding, reports the European Journalism Centre (EJC).

According Seth Lipsky, the paper's editor, the Sun is losing "significant" amounts of money due to plunging advertising revenues and more general problems such as the housing market slump and the worldwide credit crisis, writes the EJC. The Sun's editors suggest that the paper is in need of a minimum of US$ 10 (€6.9) million in financial help.

The NYT cover the US and the world, whereas the Sun puts more focus on the New York City region. The latter also reports on politics, foreign policy and the arts.

The title is published five times a week and has a circulation of nearly 70,000 copies, compared to the "million or so" copies that the NYT distributes.
