Sweden: Government will cut press subsidies, but by "much smaller" amounts

The Swedish government announces that it would still be cutting press subsidies to newspapers Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) and Skånska Dagbladet (SD), but proposes to do so in "much smaller" amounts as well as to increase the total press subsidies by 10%, reports the European Journalism Centre (EJC).
"A special support is needed for newspapers with weaker market share so that readers can have real freedom of choice," says Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Sweden's Minister of Culture.
The subject is to be addressed by the European Commission and would depend on levels of press assistance decided upon by the Riksdag, Sweden's Parliament, two years ago.
The state intended to diminish financial aid from SEK 65.4 (€ 6.9) million to SEK 17 (€ 1.8) million, envisioning a reduction that would be spread out over a five-year period, starting from 2009.
However, SvD's and SD's subsidies would now drop by SEK 15.3 million (€ 475,898) to SEK 60.9 (€ 6.4) million. Meanwhile, medium-size rural papers would have an increase in support from SEK 15.3 (€ 1.6) million to SEK 16.9 (€ 1.8) million.
