UK: Northcliffe Media the latest to begin geo-tagging
Posted by Liam Berkowitz on June 18, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Geo-tagging - the process of archiving stories according to the locations they affect - continues to grow in popularity among newspapers.
Northcliffe Media, a European newspaper publisher, began today implementing the budding technology on its newspapers' websites. The company will initially begin geo-tagging on 10 of its 55 "this is" regional news sites. By mid-September they hope to have updated a further 79 sites with the technology.
"We're trying to extend our reach away from what are our traditional newsprint footprints," said Northcliffe content strategy director Robert Hardie.
By cataloging stories geographically, geo-tagging makes it easier for newspapers to provide readers with hyper-local news. But like any nascent technology, Hardie says, geo-tagging will take some time to perfect.
"One the one hand it's opening up a major opportunity for us, but it also means we're going to have to learn new skills and make value judgments about how we tag stories with postcodes," he said.
Northcliffe's announcement comes one day after the Boston Globe launched geo-tagging on its website.
