South Africa: The Times marks triumphant first year
Posted by Liam Berkowitz on June 6, 2008 at 12:59 PM
The Times, a daily expansion of South Africa's weekly The Sunday Times, celebrated yesterday a successful first year. BizCommunity.com reports the paper has exceeded its expectations, cultivating a readership of 340,000, and increasing traffic to its website by 117 percent.
The Times' operation has been a bold one from the start. Its integrated newsroom, which merges digital and print operations, is still a developing model. The paper has also had to cope with a diminished online market due to South Africa's nascent Internet. Overcoming this adversity makes The Times' success all the more remarkable, says editor Ray Hartley.
"In our first year of operation, not only have we boldly catapulted the company into a new media era but also succeeded as a new South African daily newspaper where many others have failed," Hartley said.
