Australia: Newspapers respected, popular with readers, study says

Posted by Liam Berkowitz on June 3, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Newspapers Today, a study conducted for the newspaper advocacy group, Newspaper Works, finds that readers hold newspapers in high esteem.

The study, performed by Celsius Research and the Leading Edge, Australian-based research firms, questioned 1,010 people aged 14 to 69. Those surveyed perceive newspapers as "absorbing, dynamic and reputable," the report said. In addition, 90 percent of readers said they do nothing else when reading a newspaper.

"[Newspapers have] always been the medium that stimulates thought, starts conversations and shapes the important issues of the day," said Tony Hale, executive director of Newspaper Works.
