US: Four Tribune Company papers to narrow web width

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel (see photo), The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and The Hartford (Conn.) Courant are embarking on redesign projects to be managed by Pressline Services Inc., reports Newspapers & Technology.
The papers announced plans to reduce web width to 48 inches last year but opted for a narrower format.
The Newspaper Association of America said in February that the number of papers reducing their web width is accelerating. 48 inches was the next logical step following the prior reduction to 50 inches. However, "46-inch and 44-inch web widths now are also in the mix."
Web width reductions certainly cut costs, but they can also cause problems, as free-standing inserts (FSI) may be larger than the finished product.
