UK: Former Northcliffe execs launch paid-for weekly newspaper

Two former executives at Northcliffe Media are launching a new weekly newspaper, The Cleethorpes Chronicle, which will be the only paid-for weekly circulating in the region and the first since 1980.

The new paper is in part a revival of the 19th century Cleethorpes Chronicle and Visitors' List, which published between 1892 and 1894, reports Press Gazette.

Former Grimsby Telegraph deputy editor Nigel Lowther, the new head of the Chronicle editorial department, said the paper will be geared towards the community, and intends to "maximize the number of names and faces in every edition."

Managing director Mark Webb said they had decided to create the Chronicle after identifying a gap in the market "for a quality, editorially-led newspaper that comes out once-a-week."

However, they do not feel that they are in a position to compete editorially with dominant local paper The Grimsby Telegraph, reports HoldTheFrontPage.
