Canada: Halifax daily closes, replaced by Metro

Transcontinental is closing down Canadian broadsheet The Daily News of Halifax. It will be replaced with a free daily paper in partnernship with Metro International and Torstar Corp., and is set to debut this Thursday.
92 employees will be laid off in the move.
In a statement, Transcontinental’s Senior Vice President Marc-Noël Ouellette said the paper was struggling, forcing Transcontinental to make « an extremely tough business decision." Ouellette confirmed that the decision would not impact "Transcontinental's Halifax area distribution network, its four locally published weekly newspapers or the real estate guide Transaction."
