Thai newspaper to launch free tabloid
The publisher of The Nation, one of the two English-language pay-for newspapers delivered in the country, announced Wednesday it will publish a free English-language freesheet by March, the “Xpress”.
According to The Nation Multimedia Group, the “Xpress” will be targeting a young readership. Its content will be divided into four main sections: “The City, The World, The Sport and The Fun”.
The freesheet will be distributed at stations of Bangkok’s elevated mass transit rail system, as well as in restaurants and other major public venues the group’s chairman, Thanachai Threerapattanavong, said in a press statement.
The Nation delivers 30,000 copies a day and The Bangkok Post 60,000, which is very little compared to the Thai-language publications. However, the two broadsheets remain influential because of their generally more comprehensive news coverage.
Both papers also publish Thai-language dailies as well as a variety of other publications. The Nation is also involved in radio and television production.
