FCC waives rule for Tribune

Posted by Evan Fell on December 3, 2007 at 10:42 AM
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted Tribune Co. the temporary waivers of the cross ownership ban rule that they needed to complete their privatization by the end of the year. Tribune was granted a two year waiver in four markets: New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Hartford, Conn.
Surprisingly, the FCC also granted a permanent waiver of its rule against same-market common ownership of newspaper and broadcast in Chicago, allowing Tribune to operate The Chicago Tribune, the superstation WGN-TV, and its historic WGN-AM radio station.

A December 18th vote has been set by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to decide on a limited rollback of cross-ownership that permits newspaper/broadcast combinations in only the 20 largest U.S. markets. If that proposal were passed, Tribune would have to sell either its TV station or the Hartford Courant.

The vote will come as a challenge, just as it did with the Tribune deal, with democratic members Michael J. Copps and Jonathon Adelstein firmly disagreeing.
