US: Plans & priorities at the News & Observer: the future of the print paper and developments online

Ted Vanden, a journalist at The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C. spoke with new executive editor John Drescher about the paper’s plans and priorities. Drescher said that readers will probably not see any major changes. The paper will continue to cover state and government politics. However, it will be trying to develop more online.

A lot more databases and useful information, for example, calendars, will be put online. Also, Drescher is planning to have more investigative stories from all areas of the newsroom.

The newspaper will also break a lot more news online. As of now the newspaper has about 30-40 online updates a day and that number is growing.

Drescher also acknowledges that the print paper needs to evolve. He would like to bring new angles to news stories because he thinks that many readers already know the basic news and it would be more useful to bring fresh angles to stories.

Drescher says the paper will still break news in the print paper if it is something new that the readers do not know about, but will try to take different angles on news stories that are already up on the website.

Drescher recognizes the need to adjust to a new age and do so with a staff that is significantly smaller than it was when he signed on as managing editor five years ago. Drescher says he will drop some things from the paper in order to maintain quality. In particular, the Arts & Entertainment and the Sunday Journal section will be merged into one.

Drescher explains that the paper is constantly changing to cover areas that are important within the community and to provide online news that is so in demand. He says “For staffers who want the newsroom to stay the same every day, every month, every year, I have to get them used to the idea that it's not. We're going to be constantly changing all the time to adjust to what our readers want from us.”
