US: ABC to change paid daily circulation count

The Audit Bureau of Circulation has announced that it will change the way that it counts paid daily circulation, to provide marketers with more pertinent information.
Changes, to take place over the next three years, will cinclude counting newspapers sold at any price and counting newspapers sold at hotels or purchased by businesses in a separate category. The future audits will also note whether a newspaper was purchased at a newsstand or received through home delivery.
The announcement of the changes comes a week after the ABC combined online readership and print circulation to create “net combined audience,” reports the Boston Globe. ABC did this to show advertisers that audiences do extend beyond just print.
Circulation at 609 daily papers fell 2.6 percent to 40.7 million in the six months through September compared with the year-ago period, reported ABC last week. However, of those, 163 newspaper websites logged 164 million visitors monthly
