Notes from the Underground is the idea of two recent university graduates, Tristan Summerscale and Christopher Vernon. Will Orr-Ewing, marketing director for Notes on the Underground said, “We felt that there is a gap in the market for a free newspaper that is a bit more thought-provoking than the freesheets that are already out there."

The paper will feature writing from both new and established writers and will include short stories, cartoons, and non-fiction. Each issue will have a different theme beginning with “The Bleak Midwinter.” It was also have a website Notesfromtheunderground.com, which will aim to establish an online community of readers and writers.
 
The freesheet however is not exactly the first of its kind. The Litro is now up to its 68th issue. Litro is also fortnightly, but concentrates on only one short story per issue.

Notes from the Underground will be distributed at 30 commuter locations, with a print run of 100,000, beginning December 17th. Hundreds of submissions have already been received by the freesheet, including at least three household names in talks to contribute to the premier issue.
