Sport pays over error: editors must be cautious with pictures and captions
Posted by Evan Fell on November 16, 2007 at 11:21 AM
The Sunday Sport wrongly published a picture of a woman, using her picture to compliment an article about a woman given as Asbo for excessively noisy sex. The photo was of Jessica Lewis, who has no connection with the woman in the article and has never been given an Asbo.
The Sunday Sport has agreed to pay legal costs and damages after Lewis’ children were taunted at school and numerous people asked Lewis if she was given an Asbo.
This case only emphasizes that pictures and captions need to be more carefully scrutinized on an editorial level. Many newspapers have this problem, making errors in captions and pictures because they are being checked and approved last minute.
