India: Newspaper industry in need of communication
George Brock, president of the World Editors Forum and the Saturday Editor of The Times of London discussed the challenges that face newspapers today. It was agreed at the conference that newspapers in India need more communication within the industry. "Building the brand value of a newspaper is really important for circulation, audiences and advertising revenue," said Ravi Dhariwal the chief of INMA’s Asia division.
Brock went on to discuss that innovation is forcing newspapers to turn into multimedia enterprises, and eventually newspapers in print and newspapers online will merge. However he dismissed the notion that blogs and online sites are threatening print medium.
At the last session of the conference it was apparent that advertisers and the newspaper industry enjoy a good rapport in India. Even as newspapers in the West face challenges, circulation, readership, advertising revenue and brand value are growing quickly for many Indian newspapers.
