Future of newspapers is “vibrant and relevant”
Posted by Evan Fell on November 5, 2007 at 3:27 PM
Speaking at the Society of Editors annual conference in Manchester, Gavin O’Reilly, president of the World Association of Newspapers and chief operating officer of Independent News and Media said that “quality distinctive journalism” will be more valuable than not in the age of new media. The theme of this year’s conference is trust.
O’Reilly denounced those who view the traditional newspaper as dead. He reaffirmed his beliefs that newspapers will “stand the test of time” and are financially worthwhile if built on journalism that is both "established and trustworthy."
He also expressed the important role of newspaper websites in the new media age, but warns not to simply get mindlessly “caught up” online.
