The daily freesheet Metro, launched in 2002 recorded a growth of 28% in its number of readers, reaching 2 million in the period of July 2006 to June 2007, according the survey by Epiq. They have now reached a circulation of 880,000 copies a day.

These figures put Metro in third place for readership, behind 20 Minutes, with 2.4 million readers, and L’equipe with 2.3 million readers.

According to Valerie Decamp, director general of Metro France, “Metro has found its business model,” and she feels 2007 will be a promising year despite the difficulties of advertising right now.

Wednesday, the 14th of November, Metro wasn’t available in the kiosks of Paris due to a transportation strike. However, Metro adapted its network and will be available during the strike with new points of distribution outside train stations.

I just read on several blogs that WSJ.com has agreement with various distribution partners which prohibits them from materially making their site free. These include lexisnexis, congoo and factiva. This makes sense to me. Why would anyone distribute something unless they knew that it would remain valuable.
