US: ad revenues slope, online soars
At McClatchy, ad revenues and total revenues fell by 9.4% and 8.6% respectively in July. Online ad revenues grew 8.4% - yet only up to $14.4 million compared to $13.3 million.
Year-on-year, Gannett’s online revenues gained 37.3%, although the group didn’t provide official numbers. Gannett’s operating revenues in July fell 4.3%, from $654 million to $626 million.
Lee Enterprises’ online ad revenue grew 57.2% year to date, while overall ad revenue slightly dropped from $74.4 million in July 2006 to $72.9 million in July. Total classified revenue dropped a mere 1.1% year to date (from $284 million to $281 million).
Although many newspapers and publishers now fully grasp the importance of online operations, they have yet to create and sustain a business model that could compensate for the decline in print ad revenues.

Soar???
With a mean growth of 28% industry-wide, 8.4% or even 37% doesn't sound like soaring to me. Following the flow at best, missing opportunities more probably.
