US: Weekly World News to close

Posted by Mica Swyers on July 25, 2007 at 9:28 AM
American Media announced earlier this week that it will be suspending its tabloid publication The Weekly World News at the beginning of August 2007.

Started in 1979, The Weekly World News quickly became a supermarket newsstand favorite for its imaginative coverage of characters such as “BatBoy.”  It billed itself as “The World’s Only Reliable Newspaper.”

American Media gave no concrete reasons for the closing of the publication and its corresponding website, but with the rise of the Internet and tabloid-style blogs, circulation had declined significantly over the past five years.  In addition, there is speculation that financial troubles contributed to the decision.

there is a great website offering up-to-date politcal news! Check it out http://www.tothecenter.com!

Sad to see WWN go. I knew Eddie Clontz, the founding editor, well. Worked with him at his former daily newspaper. Worked with him one summer, filling in for WWN staffers on vacation. Some of the best writing fun I ever had. WWN had a niche, especially under Clontz. The question now remains is whom will Bat Boy, The Wolf Man, Elvis2007 and all the other WWN creatures turn now? Hopefully, there will remain an online version.
