Murdoch suggests a free, online Wall Street Journal

In a June 28 interview with Time magazine, media mogul Rupert Murdoch projected some ideas to expand the Wall Street Journal’s reach, including hiring more reporters and dropping print costs in favor of a free and online edition.

Currently, Murdoch is in talks with the Bancrofts over the acquisition of the WSJ for $60 a share.  The family has expressed concerns over the editorial independence of the paper and has attempted to install safeguards to prevent Murdoch from using it to further his business interests. Murdoch, however, claims that he has no intentions to change the paper, asking “Why would I spend $5 billion for something in order to wreck it?”

Nevertheless, the head of News Corporation expressed interest in expanding the reach of the WSJ to challenge The New York Times as a “national élitist general-interest paper.”  In addition, he projected the idea of hiring “all the best business journalists in the world” and making the Journal a global brand by providing only free, online content. “How long would it take for the advertising to come?  I would be successful, it would work, and you’d make…a little bit of money,” he explained.

In addition to the transformations above, which are concerning the form, there is also a change in terms of content. Probably a much bigger amount of the information regards now entertainment, human interest, people.

Then, probably the old reverted pyramid is less frequent. "News" writing is close to advertising copy and uses the hook/enticing approach more often. Plain information is mixed with positive "yells".
