New proposals for the safeguarding of WSJ to be sent to News Corp.

Posted by Ben Thalman on June 12, 2007 at 8:56 AM

Enforcement clauses, representation of the Wall Street Journal newsroom on a special board, a public method for airing disagreements and the power of this board to hire and fire the managing editor of the Journal are some of the criteria in a proposal that the Wall Street Journal will send to News Corp. to protect its independence.

The Bancrofts are reported to have said that they will only continue negotiations if a method for safeguarding the paper’s independence can be reached. Rejections of these criteria could lead to a breakdown in talks between the Bancrofts and Murdoch.

With seemingly more interest in Dow Jones & Co. from other players, the Bancrofts seem to be in a position to make this demand.
