Cambodge Soir to close in the midst of a strike

La Société des Editions du Mékong, which publishes the journal Cambodge Soir, announced to staff members on Wednesday that the paper would close due to financial problems. The announcement comes in the middle of a strike led by journalists to protest the treatment of a colleague, which began on Monday.

The decision to close La Sociéte des Editions du Mékong, which employs about 30 people, arrived via an oral communication Tuesday night, followed the next day by Cambodge Soir’s press release announcing the decision.

Cambodge Soir’s last edition appeared Monday, the strike suspending all other publication.  Since its creation in 1995, Cambodge Soir has been plagued by financial difficulties.  The management refused to comment on the paper’s closing.
